The Chainsmokers Achieve Record With Their Debut Album

The Chainsmokers first album, “Memories…Do Not Open” is still selling very well a year after its debut. It is number one on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronics Albums charts, marking the 34th time it has achieved this status. This puts it tied for “Demon Days” by the Gorillaz as the 3rd most weeks any album has been number one in the history of the Billboard charts. It is expected that it will hold the number two spot in the next week or next few weeks at the latest.

When “Memories…Do Not Open” debuted it hit the top of the Billboard 200 which is the all-genre charts. This album has been knocked from number one a few times as popular artists release an album, only to return to that spot once again soon thereafter. The artists that briefly took the number one spot from The Chainsmokers includes Odeszy, Above & Beyond, Kygo, and William Control. Avicii also had an older album return to number one for a week on the Billboard Dance/Electronics category after his death.

When The Chainsmokers first formed the DJ/production duo was Alex Pall and Rhett Bixler. Before long Rhett Bixler, who had been the DJ, moved on to other projects. Alex Pall’s agent put him in touch with another musician he manages, Drew Taggart. After they met they knew they could have great success together and so formed a new edition of The Chainsmokers.

They did their first live performance in September 2014. They were the opening act at Terminal 5 for the Timeflies. This was just after their first single, “#Selfie”, was released which went on to charting internationally. Later in 2014, they released “Kanye”, a song featuring the singer sirenXXX, which was also highly successful.

The three singles off “Memories…Do Not Open” were “Paris”, “Something Just Like This”, and “Honest”. The second of these three songs was performed along with the British group Coldplay. At one point “Paris”, “Something Just Like This”, and another one of their songs, “Closer”, were all in the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10. This made The Chainsmokers only the third group to have done that feat.
